Lot 90:
Follower of Gauguin, Tahitian Woman in Yellow Blouse, c. 1900-1935
Description
Follower of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) Tahitian Woman in Yellow Blouse, early 20th century Oil on paper laid to board.
A richly worked Post-Impressionist composition executed in the cloisonné manner of Gauguin’s Tahitian period, depicting a contemplative island woman against a luminous ochre background. The flattened chromatic planes, stylized contours, and introspective expression reflect the continuing influence of Gauguin’s Symbolist vision on early-20th-century European painters.
Dimensions: 33 × 30 cm (approx.)
Condition: Age toning, scattered craquelure, surface wear, and traces of an older varnish layer; minor edge losses consistent with re-mounting to board.
Provenance:
Accompanied by Bulgarian postal-cheque receipts dated 10 October 1935, documenting payments from Vladya Boyanova to the Church of Dzhulyunitsa. Whether reflecting a church-related donation or a payment made through parish channels, these records firmly place the work in Bulgaria by 1935, supporting its early-20th-century dating without affecting its attribution.
Importance:
Paintings by followers of Gauguin exemplify the rapid dissemination of his aesthetic ideals across Europe during the early 20th century, bridging Post-Impressionism and Symbolism. This example’s early documented presence in Eastern Europe adds a rare layer of historical and geographic depth to its provenance.
