A monumental oil composition depicting a medieval Russian warrior (bogatyr) mounted on a white steed before a somber landscape at dusk, pausing at a stone inscribed with runic script, a theme drawn from Russian epic folklore and central to Vasnetsov’s symbolist-nationalist oeuvre. The work demonstrates characteristic painterly handling and mythic atmosphere associated with Vasnetsov’s circle.
