Lot 93:
Eliyakota Samualie (1939–1987), Cape Dorset Engraved Steatite Plaque
Description
Signed in syllabics, with original Igloo Tag label and inscription "E. Samualie / 648". A striking engraved plaque by renowned Cape Dorset artist Eliyakota Samualie, whose works are held in major institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Samualie was celebrated for her graphic prints and sculptural works, many of which explored themes of community life, Inuit spirituality, and the natural world.
This plaque is decorated with finely incised figures and animals, evoking both the tradition of incised narrative storytelling and Samualie’s modernist interpretation of Inuit culture. The geometric form and precise lines demonstrate her distinct aesthetic sensibility, which set her apart during the height of the Cape Dorset art movement in the mid-20th century. Dimensions: 10.5 x 4.25 in.
Provenance: Ene Schoeler Collection of Inuit Art.
Condition: Very good, with natural wear consistent with age.
