JOSEPHIE KOKSEAK (1933-), E6-271, Broughton Island Sedna with Seal (Transformation) Inuit Soapstone c. 1965-75,
Description
Hand-carved from dark green/black steatite, a unified composition of Sedna (the sea goddess) with an attached seal/transformation element. Rounded forms and incised facial details; underside with old inventory number “4438-1” and early co-op/collector stickers. label e6-271, for Josephie Kokseak, from Broughton Is. Surface shows age-appropriate scuffing and scratches. There is also Inuit syllabics (ᓴ, ᓇ, ᑕ, etc.) .
Size: approx. 8.5 in (Sedna) and 5.5 in (seal element), presented as a single connected work.
Provenance: Private Canadian collection; old Cape Dorset co-op/collector inventory labels to base.
