Wood Baule Monkey Figure of Gbekre, Ivory Coast
Description
Gbekre figure from the Baule people of Cote d’Ivoire, depicting a seated monkey with exaggerated features and expressive posture. Remnants of pigment and a faded red fabric tie remain. Carved from a single block of wood, the figure exhibits a strong stance and characteristic Baule stylization with a worn, aged patina.. Approx. 50 cm (19.5 in.) H Surface wear, old cracks, and minor losses consistent with age and ritual use. Arm holding fruit is loose.
