Franz Xavier Kosler Large Cairo Market Painting
Description
Franz Xavier Kosler (Austria, 1864 – 1905) impressive large oil on canvas of a market scene in Cairo old town showing traders and with the dome of the Sultaniyya Mausoleum in the background, set in a heavily decorated giltwood frame. Provenance – property Brigadier Robert Adam Fraser (1894 – 1970), Montreal, Canada, then to a current private Montreal collector. Franz Xavier Kosler made his first trip to Cairo in 1892, and being so intrigued with the surroundings continued to travel to Egypt almost every year and devoted himself to Orientalist painting, capturing scenes of everyday life in Egypt in the late 19th – early 20th century. Large gilt frame measures 48 inches x 68, canvas measures 54 inches W x 33 H.
