Katsushika Hokusai Woodblock - The Great Wave
Katsushika Hokusai, (Japan, 1760-1849), woodblock titled Under the Wave off Kanagawa and often referred to as The Great Wave from the series Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji. Blue outline and fugitive pink cloud is plainly visible. Approximate dimensions of image: 7.9 x 9.9 inches, excluding margins. Some foxing and a small tear visible due to age. Hokusai’s most iconic image, The Great Wave is arguably the best-known and most coveted work of Japanese art, indeed, art of any kind, in the world. Impressions are held by virtually every major art institution in the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum, as well as in Claude Monet’s house at Giverny.
