Jean Labourdette (A.K.A. Turf One, France / Canada, b. 1976) Still Life, Oil and Silver Leaf on Panel Hyperrealist Painting of a Skull in 1930s metal Clock Case titled Ab Eterno, 2023. Painting measures 4.5 inches diameter, clock casing measures 13 inches H x 10 W x 3.5 deep. As a child, Jean Labourdette often visited the Paris flea markets with his father, where he developed a fascination for antiques and a passion for collecting. In the late 1980s, he established himself as a graffiti artist under the pseudonym Turf One. He moved to Montreal in 2001 where he worked as an illustrator, comic artist and filmmaker. In 2004, he began painting in earnest. His works are inspired by Old Master paintings, Russian icons, Victorian curiosities, as well as fairground culture and objects found at flea markets and antique shops, which he often incorporates into his artwork. Fascinated by the dynamic relationship between apparent opposites, Labourdette explores subconscious currents by playing with symbols, archetypes and artifacts in his fantastic worlds. He paints with with old master precision, transcending the experiences of time and death and evoking the beautiful in the ugly, the light from the darkness.
